BRIEF PLOT SUMMARY
In today’s world, people don’t often handwrite letters and cursive is rarely even taught in schools.  In this novel, a 6th grade student learns the lost art of cursive writing, discovering the power a handwritten letter can have on loved ones and even complete strangers.  His new-found prowess is put to the test when funding for the school play is jeopardized, and a family medical emergency threatens to upend his efforts to avert its cancellation.
 
When visiting his grandmother, Max Thompson discovers a previously unknown entrance to her attic.  While rummaging around, he accidentally discovers boxes of elegantly penned handwritten letters between his grandparents. Captivated by the beautifully scripted correspondence, he asks his grandmother to teach him.  Over the summer he masters the craft, while bonding with his grandparent over cooking, theater and Sherlock Holmes mysteries. 
 
As his first year in middle school begins, Max joins the drama club and begins to use his newly acquired skills, learning first-hand the emotional and heartwarming effect a handwritten note can have on the recipient.  When funding for the school play is threatened, Max must employ his newly honed skills and overcome a family medical emergency to prevent its termination.
